Eat This, Not That


Calories aren't the issue with soy sauce (almost all brands hover around 10 calories per tablespoon); it's sodium. La Choy is the worst of the big brands, packing more salt into a single ounce than you'd find in six small bags of Lay's potato chips. Slash that in half with Kikkoman.

Why settle for low-grade soybean oil mayo when you can get one made with heart-healthy olive oil for about the same price? What we really love is that Kraft caps the calories at half the amount found in regular mayo. More flavor, fewer calories: what's not to love?

Eat This, Not That


Greek yogurt is an Eat This, Not That! hall of famer. That's because compared with the regular stuff, it's creamier, it's tastier, and it packs in three times as much protein. Ignore the bells and whistles of fat-free labeling; this Yoplait cup packs nearly as much sugar as a Snickers bar.

* Also great as a substitute for sour cream!

Nearly every stick margarine in America packs more trans fat in a single tablespoon than you should consume in a full day. Enjoy real butter instead, but opt for the less-dense whipped variety to diffuse the calories.

Eat This, Not That


Even Newman's Own, a line that prides itself on simplicity, adulterates it's sauce with excessive doses of soybean oil and sugar. Classico's Tomato & Basil, on the other hand, is exactly what marinara should be: tomatoes, garlic, basil, and olive oil. It is one of my favorite sauces as well!

Here's some advice that seems to fly in the face of conventional wisdom: Choose the peanut butter with the most fat. Natural varieties like Smucker's are made from nothing but peanuts and salt. That means you're trading hydrogenated oils and corn syrup for more healthy fat.
